Creatine has its own vocabulary - from the science of phosphocreatine to marketing terms like 'buffered' and 'micronized'. This plain-English glossary defines the terms you will see on labels, in studies, and across our guides, so you can shop and read with confidence.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) (Science)
Adenosine triphosphate is the molecule your cells use for immediate energy. When a muscle contracts, ATP is broken down to release energy. Phosphocreatine helps rapidly rebuild ATP during brief, high-intensity efforts, which is why more creatine can mean more reps and higher power output.
Buffered Creatine (Kre-Alkalyn) (Forms)
Buffered creatine, sold under names like Kre-Alkalyn, is creatine with an added alkaline compound intended to raise its pH and reduce conversion to creatinine in the stomach. Head-to-head studies have found it no more effective than plain monohydrate, despite a higher price.

Creatine Cycling (Dosing)
Creatine cycling is the practice of taking creatine for a period and then stopping before resuming. There is no scientific evidence that cycling is necessary or beneficial. Creatine is safe for continuous long-term use, and stopping simply lets your stores gradually return to baseline.
Creatine Ethyl Ester (Forms)
Creatine ethyl ester (CEE) is creatine with an ester group attached, once marketed for supposedly better absorption. Research has shown it actually breaks down into creatinine more readily and is less effective than monohydrate at raising muscle creatine, so it has largely fallen out of favor.
Creatine HCl (Hydrochloride) (Forms)
Creatine hydrochloride is creatine bound to a hydrochloric acid group, which makes it far more water-soluble than monohydrate. Marketers claim this allows smaller doses and less bloating. Some people with a sensitive stomach prefer it, but there is no strong evidence it outperforms monohydrate for building muscle or strength.
Creatine Monohydrate (Forms)
Creatine monohydrate is creatine molecularly bound to a single water molecule. It is by far the most researched and widely used form of creatine, backed by hundreds of studies for safety and effectiveness. It delivers roughly 88% pure creatine by weight and is the benchmark against which all other forms are compared.
Creatinine (Science)
Creatinine is the waste product formed when creatine and phosphocreatine break down. It is filtered out by the kidneys and excreted in urine. Creatine supplementation can slightly raise blood creatinine levels simply because you have more creatine in your body - this is a lab artifact, not a sign of kidney damage in healthy people.

Kidney Function (Safety)
A persistent myth holds that creatine harms the kidneys. In people with healthy kidney function, long-term studies show creatine at recommended doses does not cause damage. It can slightly raise measured creatinine, a normal lab marker, without impairing function. People with pre-existing kidney disease should consult a doctor first.
Lean Body Mass (Performance)
Lean body mass is your total body weight minus fat mass, including muscle, bone, organs and water. Creatine supplementation combined with resistance training reliably increases lean body mass, partly through greater muscle growth and partly through increased intracellular water.
Loading Phase (Dosing)
A loading phase means taking a larger amount of creatine - commonly around 20 g per day split into 4 doses - for 5-7 days to fill muscle stores quickly. It is optional: skipping it and taking 3-5 g per day reaches the same saturation, just more slowly. Loading can cause temporary water retention or mild stomach upset in some people.
Maintenance Dose (Dosing)
The maintenance dose is the amount of creatine you take daily to keep your muscles saturated, typically 3-5 g per day. Larger individuals may benefit from the higher end. Consistency matters more than timing - taking it every day is what keeps your stores topped up.
Micronized Creatine (Forms)
Micronized creatine is creatine monohydrate that has been processed into much smaller particles. This increases the surface area, so it dissolves faster and feels less gritty in liquid. It is chemically identical to regular monohydrate with the same evidence base - the only difference is texture and mixability.
Muscle Saturation (Dosing)
Muscle saturation is the state in which your muscle creatine stores are filled to capacity. Once saturated, taking more creatine provides no extra benefit. You reach saturation in about 5-7 days with a loading phase, or roughly 3-4 weeks taking a steady 3-5 g per day.
Non-Responder (Performance)
A non-responder is a person whose muscle creatine stores are already naturally high - often due to a diet rich in red meat and fish - and who therefore sees little additional benefit from supplementation. Vegetarians and vegans, who start with lower stores, tend to be strong responders.
Percent Pure Creatine (Quality)

Phosphocreatine (Science)

During short, intense efforts it rapidly donates its phosphate to regenerate ATP - your cells' immediate energy currency. Supplementing with creatine increases phosphocreatine stores, which is the main mechanism behind its performance benefits.
Solubility (Quality)
Solubility describes how readily creatine dissolves in water or another liquid. Monohydrate is only moderately soluble, so it can leave grit at the bottom of a glass; micronized and HCl forms dissolve more completely. Undissolved creatine is not wasted - it still gets absorbed once you drink it.
Third-Party Testing (Quality)
Third-party testing means an independent laboratory - not the manufacturer - verifies a supplement's purity, dose accuracy and freedom from contaminants. Certifications like NSF Certified for Sport or Informed Sport are common marks. For creatine, third-party testing is the best assurance you are getting what the label claims.
Water Retention (Performance)
Creatine draws water into your muscle cells (intracellular water retention), which can cause a small, quick increase in body weight of 1-2 kg early on. This is water inside the muscle, not fat and not subcutaneous 'bloat'. Many people find it makes muscles look fuller.
